On January 21, 2001 ABC’s Extreme Makeover:
Home Edition featured the Riggins family of
Raleigh, NC. I was fortunate enough to be a
contributing designer to the home - and yes, I
DID work directly with Ty Pennington! Things to
note: His hair DOES stick up that much and he IS
that hyper!
The experience was incredible, and I will
never forget it. It really was just like you see
on the TV show – complete chaos, with everyone
working at their highest performance level to
give a home to this family that gives everything
they have to the community.
I was able to bring in another designer –
Audrey Barnhill of Barnhill McCleery Associates
– and within a 24 hour span we worked on the
Living Room, Dining Room, Kitchen, and both
little girls’ room. And as luck would have – the
dress-up room Castle – our biggest project! –
was featured prominently in the show. For those
of you who saw it, you know what a thrill it was
to enter that dress up room!
And the luck continued! After the show,
Mary Larsen Designs was highlighted as a
contributing designer on the Extreme Makeover
website-

(and click on the Riggins
Family) under the categories Lighting, Rugs and
Art, and Textiles, Window and Wall Coverings.
This was such a great honor because
literally thousands of people and hundreds of
companies worked on the home, but only those
considered “significant” are listed. I was
thrilled.
And then to top things off – the big project
– the design and fabrication of the lush purple
drapes for the dress up castle – is featured on
the Extreme Makeover site on the Extreme
Projects Page!

The entire project was a huge success,
and the Riggins family is thrilled. And as they
say on the show – “Welcome home, Riggins
Family, Welcome Home!”
