Help Her Rom Grow Up

The Design Dilemma

Keeping up with your children and the many stages of their lives is difficult – even more difficult is trying to keep their bedroom a reflection of each of these different stages.  Just recently I was asked to help update a little girls room from – well, a little girl look, to a pre-teen look.  The room was outgrown and it was time to make a change.

The Solution

First establish what can stay and what needs to go.  Be sure to involve your child!  Then determine a budget for any new items that can be brought in to update the look.

The Design Process

  • We established some ground rules – pink was going to stay, but switching the accent color from white to black would bring drama into the room.
  • Shelving and dolls could stay, but maybe not ALL the dolls.
  • New accessories would be found at TJ Maxx and Marshall’s – great places for great looks at a reasonable price.
  • Accessories would take on a more “grown-up” look with the black accents.
  • We cleared off shelves and bookcases, scaling back collections.
  • After using accent pieces of purses, shoes and black and pink, we finished off the room with black and pink bedding for the final touch.

Before: it's time for this traditional pink and white little girl's room to grow up.

After: accessories, including a framed "vogue" plaque and black accents - make all the difference.

The Finished Product

In this bedroom it is definitely the details that make the difference.  Not a single piece of furniture was moved or added, and in fact some pieces were removed.  Wall color stayed the same, and a decision was made not to do anything on the windows until the next room redesign.

The “yes, a girl lives here” theme was carried out with accessories of purses, shoes, and vogue style dresses in artwork  – good looks at a price that won’t break the bank – and will also be easily changed out the next time around.

The framed “vogue” plaque above the bed immediately sets the stage for the room, but the best find is the “purse” on the tall shelf next to the bed – the “purse” is made of black and pink polka dot fabric with faux feather trim in pink…. and it is really a bedside lamp!  What a perfect fun touch for that soon to be pre-teen!

So the next time your child is demanding a new look for his or her bedroom, remember to first start with some ground rules, so that both you and your child will be love the results  - like the results were loved here.
